North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, Saint-Petersburg

North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov was founded 10 years ago as a result of the merger of the two oldest educational medical institutions in Russia - St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education and St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov.

In addition to educational facilities, a multidisciplinary medical institution of the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov has its own clinical base, including Peter the Great Clinic, Clinic named after E.E. Eichwald, Medical and Prevention Center, Mycology Clinic, Family Practice Center with a bed capacity of 860 beds. Every year the clinical divisions of the North-Western State Medical University provide highly qualified medical care to more than 40,000 inpatients and 400,000 outpatients.

In order to ensure proper quality of treatment of the flexible endoscopes in the Endoscopy Department of the Peter the Great clinic the staff uses the latest equipment available. Before a decision is made on using a new equipment, all new models must undergo tests and clinical evaluation.

At the moment the Endoscopy Department uses AER ENDOCLENS-NSX MDM machines for automatic treatment of endoscopes manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. The Department has been using these machines for more than 8 years. In July 2021, the Department received for the evaluation a washing and disinfecting machine for treating flexible endoscopes "Flex Endo-1" manufactured by JSC "TZMOI". "Flex Endo-1" treats the endoscope with a detergent, blows out the channels and performs high-level disinfection and channel treatment with alcohol. The unit is equipped with a built-in leak test and automatic treatment programs, as well as freely configurable programs that are individually configured according to the staff requirements for the treatment of endoscopes. In addition, the unit is equipped with a built-in printer to simplify the process of documenting the treatment procedure.

During the entire period of using the washing unit (4 weeks), video endoscopes from OLYMPUS, PENTAX and SONOSCAPE were treated using original disinfectants and detergents - DGM Steriguard EASY Orto and DGM Steriguard EASY Enzy, as well as indicators of the activity of the solutions used. The staff carried out bacteriological control of the treatment efficiency of both endoscopes and the MDM itself.

According to the test results, Flex Endo-1 proved to be convenient and easy to operate due to its intuitive interface. The medical staff was satisfied with the experience of using the Flex Endo-1 machine and noted that it is a modern device that fully meets the requirements for high-quality treatments of flexible endoscopes and is not inferior to imported units made by the leaders in this field when it comes to treatment efficiency and ease of use. We cannot answer the question about the reliability of MDM data, since the service life does not allow to make such conclusions, however, the manufacturer gives at least a 2-year warranty for his product. Based on the results of evaluation, the Endoscopy Department of Peter the Great Clinic at the North-Western State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov can recommend this equipment for use in clinical practice.
